Overview: ANGELS AMONG US
A Mother has come to terms with the death of her husband, the Father of their two children. As she tries to move on with her life, her 13-year-old son stands firmly against anyone who tries to replace, (not just his great Dad, but his Super Hero).
Debbie Murphy, a professional business woman who has recently remarried after waiting a difficult 6 years from the day she lost her husband in an airplane accident. Debbie was never one to lose her cool, especially with her two kids, but this time she felt she had to put her foot down and get everyone’s cooperation if their “once a year” vacation was to be a success.
Although it took a near tragedy to bring the family back together, Debbie thanked God over and over for the chance to see a bright future surrounded by the three people who would be the reason for living and why she devoted her life to seeking God’s Kingdom.
FADE IN
Debbie Murphy (V.O.)
Are you listening to me?
Int. Debbie Murphy’s house – Day – 2016
A VERY FRUSTRATED DEBBIE MURPHY is standing at the bottom of the staircase shouting up at her son Danny’s bedroom.
Debbie Murphy (V.O.)
Danny are you ready? We’re leaving in
twenty minutes.
DEBBIE WAITS A moment, then repeats her question.
Debbie Murphy (V.O.)
Danny are you ready? We’re leaving
in twenty minutes.
AS DEBBIE SLOWLY climbs the 15 stairs that lead to the second floor, she dreads the thought of another battle with her first born. Danny wasn’t always a troubled kid. He just got lost in the past. The place where he felt safe and protected.
SOME HISTORY: Debbie Murphy was never one to lose her cool, especially with her two kids, but this time she felt she had to put her foot down and get everyone’s cooperation if this “Once-A-Year Vacation” was to be a success.
DEBBIE ALSO KNEW as she climbed the long flight of stairs that she would find her youngest child, Kimberly or “Angel” as everyone called her, sitting on the floor in front of her big brother’s bedroom.
STOPPING JUST BEFORE she reached the top step, because she felt the tears building up inside of her. She was remembering that night when her daughter was born, and that in a few days, the love of her life would go to be with the Lord. She also remembered how her wonderful childhood sweetheart had leaned over and kissed his sleeping “Angel” and made her a promise that he would be back in two days to bring her and her Mother home. But that wasn’t to be … the plane that her man George boarded just a few hours later wouldn’t make it to its destination, and neither would the other seventy-nine passengers aboard flight 777.
AS DEBBIE RELUCTANTLY WALKED DOWN THE HALLWAY SURE ENOUGHT, there was “Angel” sitting on the floor, banging on her brother’s door with her book of bedtime stories. Debbie put a big smile on her face and as she knelt down to comfort her baby girl, she whispered;
Debbie Murphy (V.O.)
That big brother of yours is going to get a spanking,
and you can hold him while I do it.
Kimberly (Angel) (V.O.)
Oh no Mommy, please don’t hurt him;
he’s the only brother I have.
KISSING “Angel” Debbie said,
Debbie Murphy (V.O.)
Okay, not this time, but…!
DEBBIE DIDN’T GET A chance to say anything else, because Danny’s door opened and a spaceman with wires hanging from his body brushed by her, disappearing into the bathroom across the hall. Debbie looked at “Angel,” and shaking her head said;
Debbie Murphy (V.O.)
What was that? Did you see that alien go by?
Angel (V.O.)
That’s not an alien Mommy,
that was my big brother Danny.
WHEN DANNY came out of the bathroom, he gave his Mother and sister a dirty look, then said,
Danny (V.O.)
Why are you guy’s knocking at my door?
WITHOUT SPEAKING, Angel put up her arms for Danny to pick her up, but he just squeezed her hand and started walking back into his room.
DEBBIE STOOD UP blocked the doorway. With her hands on her hips and a very stern voice, asked her son;
Debbie (V.O.)
“do you remember what today is?”
Danny (V.O.)
Yes Mother! It’s Saturday morning,
and I’m on line with my friends.
DEBBIE STARTED TO get a lot more annoyed at him, but caught herself in time and with a fake smile, she reminded him that this was the first day of their holidays.
Debbie (V.O.)
We’ve been talking about this vacation
for over a month now; don’t you ever listen?
Danny (V.O.)
Yes Mom, but I thought we were going next week,
and right now, I need to get back to my computer.
Kevin and I are working on a project.
And besides; I told you many times,
I don’t want to go anywhere with you
and that man who has moved into our home.
Debbie (V.O.)
You listen to me young man! You’re going into
your room right this minute and sign off and
shut down all of your projects, then you’re going
to meet us at the front door in twenty minutes;
is that clear?
DEBBIE DIDN’T WAIT for an answer and as she walked down the hall with “Angel”. Her voice trailed off, but Danny could hear her telling his little sister that they were going to have so much fun, and that it would be the best vacation ever.
Int. Family van – Day (first day on vacation)
DEBBIE KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BE a long drive because this would be the first vacation the family would take with the new head of the clan. Although Doug and Debbie had been dating for about two years, it had only been six months since they got married. “Angel” accepted her new step Dad right away, but Danny thought his Mom was being selfish and unfaithful to his Father and that Doug was an imposter. One night at dinner, just before the wedding, Danny stormed out saying as he pointed to Doug;
Danny (V.O.)
You’ll never be my Father and you will never
take his place. Debbie tried many times to talk to
Danny about their new life,
but he wouldn’t listen. I don’t care
if he’s a Minister or a Preacher,
I’m never going to his or any other church again.
I don’t believe in God! He took Dad away from me,
so, if He doesn’t care about me, I don’t care about Him.
NOBODY TALKED MUCH during the trip. Debbie tried to start some conversations, but when she didn’t get any response, she gave up and just lost in her new book called “Angels Among Us.”
Ext. Rosewood National Park – late afternoon – wooded area
AFTER THE LONG UNEVENTFULL drive to the park was over, it was nice to stretch and enjoy the fresh air. Debbie took command right away. After registering and finding their designated campsite, Doug was in charge of setting up the tents and Danny was given the task of getting the campfire ready for lighting at dusk. Sadly, Debbie was only able to get her son to remove his earplugs long enough to hear her orders, but without looking at her, he put them back on and then walked over and sat on a tree stump with his back to the rest of the family.
THE MOOD AND THE TENSION around the campfire were no better than at home. Danny was not into nature, so that put a damper on enjoying any outdoor activities.
DEBBIE, DOUG AND ANGEL sang a few songs but soon were overcome by the long day’s events and after a bout of yawns all agreed to go to bed.
THE NEXT MORNING DEBBIE SUGGESTED that they should all take a walk in the woods and look for some mushrooms, but when the campsite was tidied up after breakfast; Danny just went inside his tent and closed the flap. With her emotion’s half under control, Debbie confronted her son and tried to persuade him to join the family on their nature walk.
Danny V.O.)
Mom, I just want to be left alone in my misery.
THEN HE JUST turned away and went back into his tent.
WELL THAT WAS THE LAST STRAW! Debbie got mad and just lost it. She opened up the zipper on the tent and demanded that Danny come out now. He came out with his cell phone to his ear…
