The Stark Family
Versus
The Deadly Disease Called Cancer
When he got in and found his seat, the movie had already started. The first thing he saw was a hospital. All eyes were on the doctor as he entered the room and stood in silence beside the bed. Without saying a word, he shook his head, confirming Richard and Joan’s worst nightmare …that all hope was gone and that they were losing their little baby girl. The distraught father started pacing back and forth and crying aloud “God, where are you? I thought we had an agreement that you would take my life and let my little girl live. Please Lord, don’t take her; she’s only five years old!
When no answer was forthcoming, Richard started swearing and shaking his fist up at the ceiling shouting, “I’ll never believe in you again!”
Joan came over and held him saying, “My darling husband, we’re Bible believing Christians; we have to believe that it’s God’s will that our baby goes to her eternal home to suffer no more.”
Katie’s condition worsened over the next few months and the day that Richard and Joan dreaded was now here. Joan had to make most of the funeral arrangements because Richard was in total denial. It was like he was in a trance and could only do the most basic things for himself. Joan tried talking to him but he would shut her out. Even his actions were unpredictable. Things like calling out Katie’s name, asking her to come to him because he was watching something on TV that she might enjoy.
The Stark’s saddest day
There were so many people at the grave site that some had to park on the road and walk a fair distance. Although Richard and Joan appreciated the kind words from family and friends, it was nevertheless overwhelming.
Joan stayed strong through it all, but Richard was almost at the breaking point. His doctor did give him some pills to calm him down but he didn’t take any before going to the Church; he thought he could get through the day on his own. He was wrong; he did need something to stay in control and the pills would have helped. Being mad at God left him feeling completely alone. As a Christian, he should have put his faith in the Lord and that would have given him the strength to go on.
Richard did manage to make it through the burial service, but not without a few tense moments; the hardest part was leaving, knowing his precious little girl would be all alone. Kneeling and crying, he kept saying over and over, “I’m sorry Katie; I promised to protect you and I failed. Please forgive me.”
Even with the help of Aunt Ruby and some close friends it still took Joan a long time to finely convince Richard to get into the limousine.
Six Months Later
Joan hollered out “Honey, are you ready to go, we don’t want to be late for the meeting!”
When she didn’t get a reply, she ran upstairs, and found him lying on the floor, passed out. Remaining calm, she turned him over and made sure he was breathing. Then without hesitation she grabbed the phone and called 911.
Within minutes the paramedics were pounding on the door. Joan went to the top of the stairs and hollered for them to come in. After examining Richard, the ambulance driver said to his partner, “We need to get him to the hospital now.”
Joan only had time to grab her purse and tell her neighbor Leanne to look after the house because she was going to the hospital with Richard.
The Emergency doctor came to talk to Joan and he looked very worried. “Tell me please, how long has your husband been on a diet?”
Joan looked at him and said, “Richard is not on a diet Doctor.”
“Well, the tests show that he is undernourished to the point where some of his organs are shutting down.”
“That can’t be! I know he’s been under a lot of stress since we lost our baby girl a few months ago, but he has been eating…” and then she went silent.
“What is it Mrs. Stark; is there something you remember?”
“Yes, it didn’t seem unusual at the time, but I remember he would go to the bathroom after every meal and when he came out, he would be flushed like he was sick. I should have known that he wasn’t sick after all, he was making himself sick. Do you think he was trying to commit suicide Doctor?”
“All I can say is that your husband needs professional help to deal with his problems.”
“You’re right Doctor, and I know who will give him his life back. May I see him know?”
“Well, he’s heavily sedated, but he is conscious. I’ll tell the nurse to give you a little time alone with him.”
Joan put on a happy face as she walked into Richard’s room. “You gave me quite a scare Mister and you better not do it again!”
“Okay boss, whatever you say.”
Richard grabbed her hand in his; “I saw Katie, and she looked so beautiful! She was laughing and jumping up and down, you know the way she would get when she was excited. I held her in my arms and I couldn’t stop kissing her. She asked me if you were okay and I told her that you missed her very much, but you were happy that she was with God.”
“Joan, she said she knew what I was doing and that I needed to stop making myself sick. She kissed me and said that we would be together someday and not to worry about her, she was with Jesus. She made me promise to take care of you and her sisters, Demy and Julia. I told her that she didn’t have any sisters, but she just smiled and said we will soon.”
He continued, “I didn’t want to let her go, but she said she needed to go back to her new home with the Angels. She gave me another hug and said she needed to get things ready for when we come to live with her and Jesus forever.”
Joan was crying as she bent down to hug her man and then whispered, “Everything is going to work out fine. Now, you get some rest, because as soon as you get out of here, we’re going to start our new family.”
From that day forward both Joan and Rick repeated everyday – (John 14:6) I am the way, the truth, and the life: no one comes to the Father except by Me.
