Overview:
Without saying a word, the Doctor shook his head, confirming Richard and Joan’s worst nightmare …that all hope was gone, and that they were losing their little baby girl. The distraught father started pacing back and forth and crying aloud “God, where are you? I thought we had an agreement that you would take my life and let my little girl live. Please Lord, don’t take her; she’s only five years old!
When no answer was forthcoming, Richard started swearing and shaking his fist up at the ceiling shouting, “I’ll never believe in you again!”

SCENE 1 – INT. A HOSPETAL WAITING ROOM – FRIDAY AROUND 2 PM – 2008
ALL EYES WERE on the doctor as he entered the room and stood in silence beside the bed. Without saying a word, he shook his head, confirming Richard and Joan’s worst nightmare …that all hope was gone and that they were losing their little baby girl. The distraught father started pacing back and forth and crying aloud,
Richard (V.O.)
“God, where are you? I thought we had an agreement that you would take my life and let my little girl live. Please Lord, don’t take her; she’s only five years old!
WHEN NO answer was forthcoming, Richard started swearing and shaking his fist up at the ceiling shouting,
Richard (V.O.)
“I hate You, and I’ll never believe in you again!”
JOAN COMES OVER and holds Richard saying,
Joan (V.O.)
“My darling husband, we’re Bible believing Christians; we have to believe that it’s God’s will that our baby goes to her eternal home, to suffer no more!”
KATIE’S CONDITION worsened over the next few months and the day that Richard and Joan dreaded was now here. Joan had to make most of the funeral arrangements because Richard was in total denial. It was like he was in a trance and could only do the most basic things for himself. Joan tried talking to him but he would shut her out. Even his actions were unpredictable. Things like calling out Katie’s name, asking her to come to him because he was watching something on TV that she might enjoy.
SCENE 2 – EXT. THE ROSEWOOD FUNERAL HOME – FRIDAY AROUND 2 PM – 2008
THE STARKS SADEST DAY
THERE WERE SO many people at the grave site that some had to park on the road, and then walk a fair distance. Although Richard and Joan appreciated the kind words from family and friends, it was nevertheless overwhelming. Joan stayed strong through it all, but Richard was almost at the breaking point. His Doctor did give him some pills to calm him down, but he didn’t take any before going to the Church. He thought he could get through the day on his own. He was wrong; he did need something to stay in control, and the pills would have helped. Being mad at God left Richard feeling completely alone. As a Christian, he should have put his faith in the Lord, and that would have given him the strength to go on.
RICHARD DID MANAGE to make it through the burial service, but not without a few tense moments; the hardest part was leaving, knowing his precious little girl…
